Support programme “Qedela Secondary School. Mpumalanga”

This programme’s aim is to help create an environment conducive to learning and teaching, implementing a development model that addresses the academic environment, the social environment, infrastructure and safety in schools; ensuring that they have the level of management and leadership in the community.

This school is in the area of influence of our business, namely Saul Mkhizeville, Piet Relief, in the Gert Sibanda Mpumalanga district, the closest town to the Kangra mining facility, which has a population with few resources. Qedela Secondary School has 1,289 students and teaches from year 8 to 12.

The School Structure is as follows:

  •  “School Governing Body” (SGB): 12 members
  •  “School Management Team” (SMT): 8 members
  •   Teachers: 40

This programme is part of the agreement signed between the Gas Natural Fenosa Foundation and the Adopt-a-School Foundation on 8 July 2015. It was signed by the Managing Director of the Adopt-a-School Foundation, Stephen Lebere and the Managing Director of the Gas Natural Fenosa Foundation, Martí Solà Sugrañes.

The Adopt-a-School Foundation promotes the development of schools in South Africa and is a project from the Shanduka Foundation. Cyril Ramaphosa, the current Vice President of South Africa is the Chairman of both Foundations.

The mission, vision and strategic objectives of this foundation are as follows:

  • Mission: Mobilise the private sector, organisations and individuals to provide support to schools in South Africa.
  • Vision: Support the creation and consolidation of an environment that encourages learning and teaching in disadvantaged schools.

Strategic objectives:

  • Implement a development model that addresses the academic environment, the social sector, the infrastructure and security in schools while ensuring that these schools have the community management and leadership support required to create a favourable setting for learning and teaching.
  • Create opportunities to ensure that small participants are included in the improvements that the schools need.
  • Mobilise the support of individuals, companies and organisations to provide schools with what they need.
  • Raise awareness about the dilapidated state of schools in disadvantaged areas.
  • Work with communities to improve education.
  • Maintain a close relationship with all the interested parties.

In total, the program has benefited 1,289 students.
