Carbon pricing is key to fostering further decarbonisation in the European Union, but far-reaching reforms to the Emissions Trading Scheme are needed for it to become an effective tool which the EU can use to reach its 2050 decarbonisation goals. This is one of the main conclusions of the report ‘Carbon pricing. Key achievements to date in Europe and optio
Christophe Brognaux (BCG): “Energy efficiency must be a priority for addressing the climate change challenge”
Today, the global head of energy at Boston Consulting Group appeared hopeful of the possibility of achieving the emissions reduction targets, and called for the business world to adapt and for government bodies to collaborate.
Natural gas demand grew 14% in Spain in 2019, and this energy source confirmed its important role in supporting the development of renewable energies.
Energy markets expert Miguel Ángel Lasheras states that “the ecological transition will require significant investment efforts in the sector, while the gradual substitution of natural gas with renewable gases and hydrogen is considered”.
The production of energy from renewables reached 40% of the total and contributed to reducing power generation emissions by almost a quarter.
The installed capacity in wind power and photovoltaics grew by 20% in 2019.
The new report on the Spanish power sector created by the Naturgy Foundation also includes the increase of production with combined cycles in the last year, which acted as a back-up energy to renewables, as well as the increase in the tariff deficit.
The introduction of renewable gas in Spain would reduce the greenhouse gas emissions forecast for 2030 by over 10%
The maximum renewable gas production potential in Spain could be the equivalent of 65% of the current total natural gas demand if it is purposefully developed.
European countries such as Germany, the United Kingdom and Sweden are very advanced in the development of this new energy vector, which Spain seeks to boost with the future Climate Change Act.
Experts call for an improvement in the regulation of biomass for domestic use to improve urban air quality
Representatives from the Administration, companies and the academic world share the opinion that there is a need to continue implementing measures to reduce the pollution rates in cities, during a conference held in Seville.
The mayor of Valdemoro takes part in an innovative virtual trip into space created by the Naturgy Foundation to raise awareness of the planet’s environmental challenges, the energy transition and the circular economy.
The new travelling awareness-raising project, Energy Challenge, was presented last week under the framework of the COP 25, and starts its tour around Spain in Valdemoro.
The Energy Challenge will travel some 4,800 kilometres, visiting around forty Spanish municipalities during next year, where it hopes to attract 100,000 visitors.
Assumpció Puig: “Energy rehabilitation is a strategy that addresses the challenge of reducing greenhouse gases”
The dean of the Association of Architects of Catalonia called for all the players involved to work together, at a seminar during which representatives of Barcelona City Council and the Catalan government pledged to take advantage of renewable energy in housing rehabilitation.
Vaclav Smil: “Replacing fossil fuels with renewable energies is a task that will inevitably occupy us for several generations.”
The scientist, ranked as one of the world’s top 100 thinkers according to ‘Foreign Policy’, said that “we need an accelerated energy transition to avoid excessive global warming.”
Smil emphasised the role of natural gas in decarbonisation and energy efficiency.
Andris Piebalgs: “Participants in the energy markets must have suitable incentives to operate efficiently in the short term and invest appropriately in the medium and long term.”
Today in Madrid, the Energy commissioner stated that it is necessary “to promote flexibility in the wholesale market and provide clear pricing signals to encourage continuous penetration of renewable energy and to guarantee investments.”
The researcher at the Centre for Monetary and Financial Studies, Jorge Padilla, spoke about incorporating renewable energy into the wholesale electricity market and supported the need to design suitable capacity remuneration mechanisms.
