Our Foundation takes part in a high-level event on the just transition as part of the agenda of the Spanish Presidency of the Council of the European Union

Our Foundation has taken part in a high-level event on the Just Transition, organised by the Spanish Government Institute for the Just Transition, an Autonomous Body of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge The event was held in Ponferrada (León) on 26 and 27 October 2023 as part of the agenda of the Spanish Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

The aim of the event was to discuss the just transition as an essential path and accelerating factor for the reindustrialisation of Europe, in a framework of climate neutrality by 2030 and in line with the commitments adopted in the Paris Agreement. Chaired by Teresa Ribera, Third Vice-President of Spain and Minister for the Energy Transition and Demographic Challenge, and Sara Aagesen, Secretary of State for Energy, the event included the heads of EU institutions, European government members, representatives of municipalities and regions immersed in this process, as well as business, trade unions and social organisations. Discussions also took place with other countries embarking on a path similar to the EU in terms of climate ambition and just transition.

María Eugenia Coronado, managing director of our Foundation, took part in the roundtable Just Energy Transition and Gender Equality, where she presented the unpublished report prepared by the Foundation and the ITJ entitled “The employment of women in the just energy transition in Spain”. This is the first report to provide an adapted, comprehensive diagnosis of the status of women in the job market, linked to the energy transition as part of the major economic and production transformations associated directly and indirectly with the clean energy transition, using many statistical sources. Backed by a quantitative and qualitative analysis of employment in the sectors indicated, the study developed by Abay Analistas offers articles from a group of independent experts in the fields of employment, gender quality and energy transition, coordinated by the political scientist Cristina Monge.

Ms Coronado affirmed that “studies such as this one provide objective data on a situation that must be reversed in order to guarantee a just transition. Because of this, our foundation now has training and employability programmes in place focused on women”.
