Course aim
Climate change is the greatest challenge of this century, where such important aspect as the health and wellbeing of the population, the quality of the environment and the future of many economic sectors come into play. Burning fossil fuels is one of the main causes of climate change as it produces greenhouse gases that, in turn, lead to global warming.
To overcome this challenge, we need a new growth strategy that does not involve the production of greenhouse gas emissions. In Europe, the European Green Deal is the roadmap that will guide the EU towards a sustainable economy.
Renewable energies play a fundamental role in the fight against climate change. Unlike energy coming from fossil fuels, renewable energies do not emit greenhouse gases when generating energy. Consequently, they represent a clean solution that prevents environmental damage and does not affect climate change.
Biomethane from biogas or synthesis gas, a 100% renewable gas, is one of these renewable energies. It has lots of potential and is one of the most widespread renewable energies in Europe, as it helps develop the circular economy as a sustainable alternative to waste treatment and drives the energy transition, contributing to decarbonization and EU emission reduction objectives.
Therefore, the aim of the course is to provide trainers with a solid knowledge base on renewable gas and all the related aspects (technical, regulatory and economic aspects, as well as applications and waste management, etc.), which, in turn, will allow their students to learn about this important sector in both Spain and Europe.
Skills
During the course, participants will acquire a solid knowledge of the main aspects related to biogas and renewable gas, as well as the production cycle, such as biogas production sources, production technologies and the use of renewable gas. They will also gain cross-cutting knowledge about the role of biomethane in waste management and improving the environment (circular economy and carbon footprint reduction), and be introduced to the regulatory aspects applicable to renewable gas and biogas plants.
In addition to the theory, they will gain practical knowledge applicable to the sector focused on calculating and sizing digesters, estimating biogas and biomethane production depending on the substrate, selecting the most optimal technology, etc.
Methodology
The sessions can be followed online.
The virtual classroom allows for live consultations via chat, and the sessions are recorded so participants can watch them afterwards.
In order to ensure participants learn correctly in these sessions, they will be provided with a document containing all the theory in 4 blocks and a dossier of all the practical exercises to be carried out before doing them.
Three theoretical-practical sessions will be carried out, as well as a virtual visit to the La Vall d’Uixó agro-industrial biogas production plant and the Vila-Sana biomethane production plant.
Recipients
The programme is aimed at vocational training teachers of subjects related to renewable energies, preferably from the "Energy and Water” and "Chemistry” families, or also from the “Agriculture” and “Installation and Maintenance” families in this case. They will be given tips and teaching materials with exercises and the corresponding answers in order to be able to transmit what they have learnt to their students.
